first_imgBRILL TAKES TO TURF AS SHE GOES GATE TO WIRE TO WIN $75,000 LADY OF SHAMROCK STAKES BY 1 ¾ LENGTHS UNDER SMITH; TRAINED BY CHATLOS, SHE GETS MILE ON GRASS IN 1:35.75ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 28, 2019)–Idle since July 5, Brill made her first start on grass a winning one Saturday at Santa Anita, as she went to the lead out of the gate under Mike Smith and never looked back, winning the $75,000 Lady of Shamrock Stakes by 1 ¾ lengths.  Trained by Don Chatlos, the 3-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro got a flat mile over a turf course rated as “good” in 1:35.75.With Flavien Prat off of his opening day mounts due to illness, Hall of Fame veteran Mike Smith stepped into the void and despite the fact Brill was taking blinkers off today, she showed plenty of natural speed.“We felt she’d be on the lead,” said Chatlos.  “She’s just a quick horse.  She had been chasing some very fast fillies earlier this year at Oaklawn Park and it didn’t look like there was anything in here today of that caliber.“We put her on the grass because being by Medaglia d’Oro, we thought she’d like it and we think the grass will be better for her in the long run.”Fourth, beaten 18 lengths going 6 ½ furlongs in the Grade III Victory Ride Stakes at Belmont Park on July 5, Brill, who was purchased for $1 million as a Fasig Tipton July yearling by owner OXO Equine, LLC, was off at 7-2 in a field of eight 3-year-old fillies and paid $9.00, $4.80 and $3.00.“She had the blinkers off today, but she turned it on really nice and handled the grass really well,” said Smith.  “I think that’s the kind of race they’ve been looking to see out of her.  I believe she’s going to forward off of this.”Out of the Malibu Moon mare Hung the Moon, Brill, who was a close third three starts back in the Grade III Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn on April 12, picked up her first stakes win in her eighth career start and with the winner’s share of $48,840 she increased her earnings to $231,040.Off as the 6-5 favorite, Keeper Ofthe Stars was attentive to the pace while saving ground throughout and proved second best, finishing 1 ¼ lengths in front of Lucky Peridot. Ridden by Abel Cedillo, Keeper Ofthe Stars paid $2.80 and $2.20.Off at 4-1 with Javier Castellano, Lucky Peridot prevailed by a nose over longshot Sold It and paid $2.80 to show.Fractions on the race were 23.06, 47.62, 1:12.38 and 1:24.15.last_img read more

Poch tells Spurs flops to ‘man up’ as 7-2 Bayern humiliation adds to woes

first_imgMAURICIO POCHETTINO told his battered Spurs flops to “man-up” after they suffered the worst home defeat in the club’s 137-year history.Former Arsenal man Serge Gnabry bagged four of the rampant Germans’ five second-half goals.2 Mauricio Pochettino believes his Tottenham players must ‘man up’ after they were crushed 7-2 at home to Bayern MunichCredit: AFP or licensorsTottenham boss Poch said: “This type of situation can happen and you need to show your quality like a man first, to face it like a professional, like a man.“You need to put your quality, how you are strong, to face this type of situation. What comes after is the professional side.“Now we need to be men and be strong together to try to bounce back and change this feeling.”Tottenham legend Chris Waddle called Pochettino’s side “a shambles” after they failed to build on Son Heung-min’s opener with Joshua Kimmich and Robert Lewandowski putting Bayern 2-1 up at the break. But it was the Gnabry show after the break as he netted a quad and Lewandowski notched a second, while Harry Kane scored from the spot to make it 4-2 with 61 minutes played. But the hosts fell apart, conceding three times in the last seven minutes.Poch added: “The feeling at the end when we conceded the three goals it was like the team was tired and gave up a little bit.“Maybe that showed a little bit our frustration in the game because up until 82 minutes the team were alive, we were fighting, trying to create chances to score the third goal and we were still in the game. But they were very clinical.’FIX NOTHING SHOUTING’“To be honest, after 30 minutes, or the first half, it was my best feeling managing the team this season. That is so difficult to accept how the feeling changed in the second half and the feeling was really, really bad.“But when you have the players Bayern Munich have, an amazing team, because the team in the end was okay, the game was lost and we conceded.“It is difficult to talk now. We cannot talk now, we need to be calm first to talk. We know how we feel – very disappointed – but now is the moment to be calm. I am going to fix nothing shouting.”Poch added: “I told you, many weeks ago this is going to be a tough season.“After the final of the Champions League, it was a chapter closed and now the club is in a period when they need to open another chapter and decide a project, medium, long-term.“This defeat won’t change my opinion.”Ex-Spurs star Waddle, who covered the game as a BBC pundit, said: “I do not get the tactics. It’s not playing to their strengths.“I don’t think Serge Aurier wants to be there, Christian Eriksen hasn’t signed a new contract.2 The Spurs defenders capitulated horribly and conceded seven goals from just ten shots on target at home to the German giantsCredit: Getty Images – GettyLatest Champions League newsREF RELEASEDChampions League ref Vincic released by cops after arrest in prostitution raidREF RAIDChampions League ref Vincic ‘arrested in raid into drugs and prostitution ring’CITY SITUATIONChampions Lg & Europa Lg to be played in ONE host city from quarters onwardREDS TEST2005 Champions League final quiz – How well do you remember Istanbul 15 years on?CRYING SHAMEPoch couldn’t stop crying after CL final as he talks for first time since axeEUR JOKINGCity, Chelsea & Man U’s dreams in jeopardy as govt impose quarantine on arrivalsRevealedLUK RAN OUTLukaku says he will NEVER forgive Chelsea flop AVB for 2012 Champ League axeRevealedRUSSIAN ROULETTEMan Utd’s 2008 Champions League Moscow heroes and where they are now“There is so much going on off the pitch. Antonio ‘can’t look at son’ after FIFA loss to Sessegnon and now faces forfeit

first_imgThe winger joked of a “broken controller” after being taken apart on the video game, leaving him “unable to look his son in the face”.It is fair to say the scoreline didn’t tell the whole story as Tottenham had two penalties saved and hit the woodwork on course to the win.Sessegnon even showed how much of an impact Jose Mourinho’s tactics are having on his approach to the game, having just 49 per cent of the ball but still grabbing the victory and clean sheet.Although the wide-man didn’t get on the scoresheet with his own virtual player, instead it was Giovani Lo Celso and Lucas Moura bagging the goals. But while Sessegnon was the clear victor, there was also a worthy cause involved with player agency USM, who represent both players, donating £1,000 to the mental health charity MIND.Viewers flocked to watch the action unfold on Twitch and Antonio appeared on Instagram afterwards to discuss the result.FULL-TIME STATSScore: Spurs 2-0 West HamShots: 15-2Tackles: 15-12Pass Accuracy: 94%-86%Possession: 49%-51%Shots on target: 13-2Fouls: 0-3Corners: 1-12 Two first-half goals earned the win for SessegnonHe stated: “I’m really disappointed in myself. Final countdown for ANZAC rugby league test

first_imgBut instead of recognizing the two countries’ close connection, the teams’ coaches have got into a war of words before the double header in Canberra, where both the New Zealand and Australian women’s teams will also play. The Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has criticized the Kiwis camp in his weekly newspaper column, titled “Where the bloody hell are you?”Meninga’s claimed the Kiwis were “nowhere to be seen” in the lead up to the match, while the Kangaroos have been fulfilling publicity requirements on their own.Meninga said there was an onus on both teams to promote the match especially given it’s in a World Cup year. Not one to back down from a challenge, Kiwis coach David Kidwell addressed Meninga’s comments while awkwardly sitting right next to him at the coaches’ press conference.”I’m the same with Mal, we want international football to be at the pinnacle and we’ll do our part but the best part we can do is to have a great game on Friday night and that’s where our focus has got to be,” Kidwell said. While the coaches are happy to enter a verbal sparring session, the players themselves are more focussed on the numbers. With 99 wins against New Zealand, Australia is aiming to become the first international team in rugby league history to win 100 Tests against an opponent. On top of that, Captain Cameron Smith will become just the second Australian to wear the Green and Gold jumper 50 times behind Darren Lockyer.Smith said he’s incredibly honoured to reach the milestone.”I’ve been very lucky along the way, I think I’ve mentioned that all week that I’m very fortunate to wear the jersey so many times.”As far as my preparations are concerned it hasn’t really been about the number of Test matches that I’ll play tomorrow, it’s just been about where the team’s at with our preparations physically and mentally (and) where we need to be tomorrow night to have a chance at winning the Test match,” Smith said. While Australia recognizes the great achievements of their captain, tonight will mark the revival of one of New Zealand’s most polarizing playerHaving last played for New Zealand in 2011, Russell Packer thought his NRL and representative career was all but over when he was convicted of assault in 2014 but he’s been given a second chance, starting at prop in tonight’s match. The 27-year-old said he’s been incredibly lucky.”But I’ve also put in a lot of hard work and I’ve had a lot of support behind me from my family.”It’s probably a little bit of reward for everyone along the way for me to be recognized and represent my country again,” Packer said. Also returning for the Kiwis after a two year self-enforced hiatus is former captain Simon Mannering as well as Warriors first-five Kieran Foran.Tonight’s match will be the final mid-year test played between the two with a revamp of the international schedule underway. It’ll also be the final time the two sides play one another before the World Cup later this year.Tonight’s double header will start with the Australian Jillaroos women taking on the Kiwi Ferns at 7.30. Eagles soar above Vipers

first_imgThe Eagles dominated most of the first half to lead 16-0.But the Vipers fought their way back into the match with a double to halfback Sebulong Ragi in the last 10 minutes, to leave the halftime score at 16-10 in favour of the Eagles. The Vipers hit early in the second half with a four pointer to narrow the score to 16-14, thanks to Richard Kambo, who was too big and too strong to hold down. But the Eagles, inspired by a vocal crowd of supporters, took the game away from the Vipers with two quick tries, the second coming off a perfectly placed kick that saw Moses Meninga leap up and catch and score. This put the score out to 26-14.But the Vipers were not out yet and in the remaining 10 minutes, hit back after Supa George kicked for himself and scored near the posts. The conversion was successful with the all the momentum now with the Vipers. But time eventually ran out for the Vipers to lose another game at home in what has been a tough season for the city boys. The icing on the cake came a minute out from full time when Isaac John ran 60 metres to score and leave the Eagles fans ecstatic. The win for the Western Highlanders has secured second place for the finals in the Digicel Cup competition.last_img read more

Hazard is again the best Belgian player abroad

first_imgEden Hazard is the best Belgian player who plays outside Belgium for the third consecutive year. The end of Real Madrid has been imposed in the double vote for the ‘Golden Shoe’ (gold shoe), an award given by the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN), Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. The former Chelsea player started with an advantage, since he came out triumphantly from the first count, which always occurs in the month of June. However, its rugged start in the capital of Spain, injuries through, and the fantastic start to the season made by the City and Inter questioned which has been his third wound, after those achieved in 2017 and 2018, in his time as a star of Stamford Bridge. In the end, the great first half of the year played by Eden It has weighed more for the selection of journalists and Belgian football personalities in charge of casting votes. The 458 points accumulated by the Madrid player have surpassed the 348 of the citizen and at 248 of neroazzurro. Due to the injury, Hazard was unable to attend the ceremony and has intervened through a large screen, through which he has recognized the merits of his countrymen. Champion of the Europa League with Chelsea and best player of the competition, in addition to his outstanding work at the head of his team, which earned him being named ‘Red Devil of the Year’ at the end of last December. Decorations such as those slipped here caused the white set to break the bank for him this summer, fulfilling, in passing, the dream of a child of La Louvière: “When I started playing in the home garden it was always the club I supported,” he acknowledged recently. However, with the white team has failed to shine at the level that made him land in the Bernabéu. A single goal and 4 assists accumulated in the 13 games that the physical mishaps have allowed him to dispute they have left the white fan with honey on their lips. After a slow adaptation related to a relaxing holiday- “I will not hide it, in summer I took five kilos”-, began to show its true level, when the aforementioned mishaps have left him in the dry dock the last month of 2019. Case similar to the other boxer, a Romelu Lukaku who has been reborn in Inter Milan at the orders of Antonio Conte, as evidenced by his 18 goals and 4 assists in the matches played with the neroazzuri. But the one who has penalized him greatly his irregular campaign at Manchester United. His 5 goals in 15 games with the red devils from the first month of the year 2019 until the moment of his march to Italy have been a slab Too heavy to trace. His rivals had made enough merits to steal the golden award, although, in both cases, inversely to white crack. De Bruyne has started 2019-20 as a shot, threatening even an ancient record of assists that Thierry Henry has had since 2003. But his final last season was a carbon copy of what his compatriot suffered today. The injuries did not allow him to maintain continuity with those of Guardiola and only got one goal and 2 assists in the Premier since January until the end of the season. This is the final classification after the two votes:Eden Hazard (Chelsea / Real Madrid) 458Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) 348Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United / Inter Milan) 248Youri Tielemans (Leicester) 87Axel Witsel (Borussia Dortmund) 78Vincent Kompany (Manchester City) 58Dries Mertens (Napoli) 52Divock Origi (Liverpool) 51Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham) 50Thorgan Hazard (Borussia Mönchengladbach / Borussia Dortmund) 49last_img read more
