first_img FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailTAMPA, Fla.-Saturday, BYU football (2-3) on the season, following a bye, returns to action against South Florida (2-3, 1-1 in American Athletic Conference play).The Cougars’ last game saw them fall 28-21 at Toledo of the Mid-American Conference.The Cougars are currently ranked 106th nationally in scoring offense (22.2 points per game).With sophomore signal-caller Zach Wilson (108-175, 1,312 yards, 6 TD’s/5 INT’s) injured for this game, BYU will turn to freshman quarterback Jalen Hall, a product of Spanish Fork’s Maple Mountain High School.In spot duty this season, Hall has completed 4 of 7 passes for 58 yards.The Cougars’ running game is currently bolstered by senior tailback Emmanuel Eskupa (30 car, 141 yards, 2 TD’s) who filled in after graduate transfer Ty’Son Williams (49 car, 264 yards, 3 TD’s) was lost for the season.Symmetrically each averaging 14.1 yards per reception on the season for the Cougars are senior receivers Aleva Hifo (20 rec, 283 yards, 2 TD’s), and Micah Simon (19 rec, 267 yards) and junior tight end Matt Bushman (18 rec, 253 yards, TD).Freshman kicker/punter Jake Oldroyd has made 10 of 13 field goals on the season and 7 of 8 PAT attempts for the Cougars.Defensively, the Cougars are tied with South Alabama, ranking 102nd nationally in giving up 31.2 points per game.Freshman linebacker Payton Wilgar has two interceptions on the season to pace the Cougars. Senior defensive back Dayan Ghanwoloku has an interception as well and leads BYU with 25 unassisted tackles.The South Florida Bulls come into Saturday’s game having won two of their last 3 games. These wins include a 55-16 rout of FCS foe South Carolina State and a 48-22 win over Connecticut last Saturday. The sole loss in this span for the Bulls came at the hands of Southern Methodist (21-48).The Bulls are tied for 86th nationally in scoring offense with Ohio at 26.8 points per game.South Florida has been blessed by the skills of redshirt freshman signal-caller Jordan McCloud (42-75, 552 yards, 7 TD’s/4 INT’s) this season. Senior Blake Barnett (40-77, 434 yards, 4 TD’s/2 INT’s) has also done well when called upon.McCloud has also run for 144 yards and three scores on the season while the Bulls’ top tailback is senior Jordan Cronkite (53 car, 225 yards, 4.2 yards per carry).In the receiving department, South Florida is paced by senior tight end Mitchell Wilcox (10 rec, 178 yards, 3 TD’s), sophomore tailback/receiver Johnny Ford (13 rec, 149 yards, 2 TD’s) and sophomore receiver Bryce Miller (10 rec, 128 yards, 3 TD’s).Defensively, the Bulls rank 93rd nationally in scoring defense, tied with Minnesota and Nebraska, with 29.8 points surrendered per contest.They are tied for 39th nationally in sacks with 13. Graduate students linebacker Patrick Macon and defensive end Greg Reaves have two sacks apiece to pace the Bulls.South Florida has six interceptions on the season, with one apiece from sophomore defensive back Nick Roberts, graduate student defensive back Devin Studstill, junior defensive back KJ Sails, sophomore defensive back Vincent Davis, junior defensive back Brock Nichols and redshirt defensive lineman Stacy Kirby.This is the first meeting in history between the Cougars and Bulls on the gridiron.
