FRISCO, Texas – Central Arkansas’ Hunter Henderson and Gracie Hyde are the Southland Cross Country Athletes of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. All Southland Athlete of the Week awards are presented by MidSouth Bank.The Central Arkansas duo each claimed personal-best times at the UCA XC Challenge over the weekend in Conway, Ark. UCA will be back in action Saturday, Sept. 21 at the John McNichols Invitational, hosted by Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind.Men’s Athlete of the Week: Hunter Henderson, Central Arkansas – So. – Tecumseh, Kan. Henderson led his Central Arkansas squad to a season-opening victory with a second-place individual finish at the UCA XC Challenge. The sophomore clocked in with a personal-best 19:08.5 clip in the 6k race. Henderson led a group of five Central Arkansas runners to top-10 finishes against a field of 13 teams.Honorable Mention: Olari Livingston, NichollsWomen’s Athlete of the Week: Gracie Hyde, Central Arkansas – So. – Benton, Ark.Hyde crossed the finish line with a personal-best time of 14:32.1, winning first-place individual honors by 15 seconds. The sophomore led her Central Arkansas team to 15 points and a meet victory in a 10-team field for the Bears’ season-opening 4k event at the UCA XC Challenge.Honorable Mention: Eleana Callejas, NichollsSouthland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athletes is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots.
